The Importance of Asking for Help with Addiction

Victory Bay

At Victory Bay, we encourage people to ask for help when it comes to addiction. Whether you’re the one suffering or you know someone suffering, talking about it and listening to others’ stories can improve your situation. In this video, our primary counselor Michael talks about the importance of asking for help with addiction:

Or read the transcription here:

“Hey what’s up, I am Michael Schaub, primary counselor at Victory Bay Recovery Center and I want to take a minute and speak about asking for help. This isn’t the easiest thing to do – a lot of people struggle with this, a lot of families are afraid to speak up about it and they isolate the incident and before they can actually ask for help it’s too late. The hope is that you, too, don’t have to suffer like that.

Everyone knows somebody who’s struggling from addiction, whether you are the individual who is currently struggling – chances are you knows somebody who found recovery. Pick up the phone and call them, ask them for help, ask them how they did it. If you are the family member who is struggling, chances are you know somebody else whose son or daughter has been struggling with addiction. They have experience with this situation. Please pick up the phone and call them. If you are the individual, get yourself to a meeting and raise your hand and ask for help. If you’re the family member or the loved one of somebody who is suffering, get yourself to an al-anon or nar-anon meeting – any 12-step meeting – raise your hand, talk about it, share your experience, make yourself open to receiving help. But you got to speak about it first.

Again, I know this isn’t the easiest thing to do, but it starts with picking up the phone and it.
