About Benzodiazepine Use

Benzodiazepines, also commonly called “benzos,” are a class of psychoactive drugs discovered accidentally in 1955. They affect the central nervous system by enhancing the gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors in the brain. This therefore results in a sedated or relaxed state.

Some of the most common benzodiazepines include Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, as well as Ativan – all of which can relieve symptoms associated with anxiety, seizures, panic disorders, and alcohol withdrawal. However, their effects can be addicting and can easily lead to a need for a benzodiazepine addiction treatment.

The Dangers of Benzodiazepine Use

While some benzodiazepines are short-acting, others are long-acting, but no matter the length of "high", the symptoms are generally the same and can lead to benzodiazepine addiction:

  • An overall relaxed feeling
  • Mild to moderate sense of euphoria
  • Slower heart rate and breathing
