VICTORY BAY

Seeking Safety Therapy Program

Trauma and addiction go together for many people. Often, trauma occurs first, then addiction develops later as people turn to substances to cope with the emotional aftermath of trauma. For some, the addiction may develop first and trauma results.

Seeking Safety is an evidence-based weekly group therapy session ran by a trained clinician, designed to specifically treat trauma and substance use together. The focus of Seeking Safety therapy is to help Victory Bay clients attain safety from trauma and substance abuse.

Goals of Seeking Safety

The top three goals of the Seeking Safety Therapy Program include:

  • Learning to respect yourself
  • Learn to trust yourself and others
  • Healthy coping skills

A safe environment will be created. Clients will not be asked to explore painful trauma narratives. In order to keep the room feeling safe, we will not permit clients who are late to group.

This treatment is designed to model, within each session, how to make good use of time, how to “contain” appropriately, and how to set goals and stick with them. For those struggling with PTSD and substance abuse, who can become impulsive and overwhelmed, the predictable structure of the session helps you know what to expect.

This treatment follows a consistent format. The format is designed to provide ample time to process your current and past struggles as well as learn healthy means of coping.
