Understanding Levels of Care in Behavioral Health

A level of care describes how much structure and clinical support a program provides. Some people need a safe place to live while they focus on healing. Others do well with a few sessions a week while staying at home. Most people move between levels over time, and that movement is a normal part of treatment, not a setback.

At Victory Bay, placement starts with a needs-based mental health assessment and a recommendation for where to begin. You and your care team revisit that recommendation together as you progress.

For substance use care, The ASAM Criteria from the American Society of Addiction Medicine defines standards for each level of care across the continuum. It also guides decisions about when a person is ready to move to a less intensive level.

Many people come to us with more than one concern, such as depression alongside substance use. Adults in our eating disorder treatment programs move through these same levels as their needs change.
