About Ultram (Tramadol) Use & Addiction

Ultram is the brand name for the drug tramadol – a synthetic opioid used to treat moderate to severe pain. Like other opioids, it alters the way the brain perceives and responds to pain and boosts serotonin, making it a drug that can be easily misused or abused.

When it was first introduced in 1994, Ultram was considered a “safer” alternative to other opioids, however, as time goes on, evidence is showing that Ultram addiction is higher than expected. In fact, about 95% of abusers have a prior history of other substance abuse.

The Dangers of Ultram (Tramadol)

When an individual abuses Ultram, they either take more doses than recommended, higher doses than recommended, or they mix Ultram with other substances in order to achieve a “high.” This practice can ultimately lead to a need for Ultram rehab. Some of the effects many people feel are:

  • A mellow euphoria
  • Relaxation
  • Pain relief
  • Reduced anxiety
  • An overall warming sensation
  • Elevated mood
