VICTORY BAY

Family Therapy Program

Addiction is a family disease. The wreckage that an addict causes often leaves a family traumatized and resentful. As part of our family therapy program at Victory Bay, we strongly recommend family members educate themselves about the disease of addiction and learn how best to provide for their loved ones.

A great way to help a loved one recover from their addiction is by showing your support. Victory Bay offers a variety of family programs and scheduled events so family members can be involved in their loved one’s recovery process and support them from start to finish.

These events help clients know they are loved and supported through their recovery journey. Also, they provide a great way for the whole family to stay close during this difficult time.

Some topics Victory Bay helps to explain include:

  • What is addiction?
  • How is addiction treated?
  • What is a relapse?
  • How can I help an addict?
  • What should I do in case of emergencies?

Family Therapy Program

A family therapy program can also be a beneficial way to bring families closer together and get more involved during recovery. Family therapy is especially helpful in dealing with feelings loved ones may have about addiction.

It can also help resolve any underlying issues between clients and their family members that may be a contributing factor in their addiction.

This therapy can include techniques such as:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • Dialectic behavioral therapy
  • Talk therapy
  • Psychodynamic therapy
  • It is important to establish good communication with family members to help clients work through recovery.

Family Support Meetings

Al-Anon is a support group composed of people who share their experience, strength and hope with one another pertaining to a loved one who is suffering from alcoholism.

This group is an anonymous 12-step program that helps families to overcome grief and learn not to enable their loved one who is suffering from the disease of alcoholism.

Why Are Support Groups Important?

The most important reason why support groups are important is that every member of the family is affected by substance abuse differently. Teenagers may handle it differently than adults. Likewise, a spouse may be affected differently by addiction than a parent.

Each type of addiction presents its own set of challenges. Many times family members are not equipped to handle the fallout from addiction. Eventually, someone in the family will take drastic measures to deal with the problem.

A support group can offer encouragement and answers and help reveal pain and other emotions that are going on inside the family member. A support group can also provide an avenue for someone to share their feelings or get support if they feel like they cannot get it from somewhere else.

A family can create a pattern of codependency with the addicted person, either collectively or individually. These patterns can be as destructive as addiction.
Even worse, these patterns can be difficult to detect because the members may not even realize they are creating them.

A support group can help family members discover these patterns because they can identify with other people in the group who have done the same thing.

Family Events at Victory Bay

We often have social events at our facility for families to enjoy time together. These family events let clients bond with family members through normal everyday activities such as barbeques, game nights, and more. This allows clients to be with their families in normal, fun settings while still being in recovery.
