VICTORY BAY

Group Therapy

Group therapy is the process of meeting with a trained professional and at least two other clients in a safe and nurturing space. Group therapy can take place in a therapist’s office or in a group room and sessions can vary depending on the group material and topic.

hero 2 1

There are two distinct types of groups, open groups, and closed groups. Open groups are groups in which new members are welcome to join at any time. Closed groups are groups in which all members begin a group at the same time and/or group members attend consistently. Some of the most common forms of group therapy include psychoeducation groups, skill-building groups, and process groups. Psychoeducation groups prioritize educating the group on a specific topic. Skill-building groups emphasize teaching and practicing effective skills. Lastly, process groups focus on allowing the group to process openly any present concerns, feelings, and/or struggles. Each of these group therapy groups provides many benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions About Group Therapy Sessions

What type of group therapy do you offer, and what would be most helpful?

We offer a variety of group therapy options to cater to the diverse needs of our clients. Psychoeducation groups educate you on a particular topic, empowering you with knowledge. Skill-building groups enable you to practice helpful tools and coping strategies. Process groups provide an open environment where you can share your feelings, challenges, and growth with others.

We can help you find the group that is appropriate for your personality and goals, ensuring you can optimize your treatment.

What is the difference between closed groups and open groups?

Open groups accept new members at any time, which provides flexibility if your availability or willingness changes. Closed groups begin with a fixed number of members attending consistently from the start, fostering a stable, unified dynamic that builds trust and connection. We can guide you to the group format that best suits your recovery process.

What should I expect in a group therapy session?

Each session offers a safe and non-judgmental environment, allowing you to feel at ease. You can listen, express yourself without hesitation, practice new skills, and receive feedback and support from both the therapist and your peers.

How does group therapy help with triggers and stress?

Our groups teach you effective ways of identifying, making sense of, and responding to triggers and stress. Through sharing and learning from one another, you will become stronger and better able to cope with challenges in healthier ways.

Is confidentiality maintained in group therapy?

Everyone in the group vows to maintain confidentiality, allowing you to speak freely and participate without fear of judgment or exposure. Your safety and privacy are our top concern.

Who facilitates your group therapy sessions?

Our therapists are experienced, licensed professionals trained specifically in group process therapy and recovery from addiction. They lead the discussions with sensitivity, ensure a non-judgmental atmosphere, and adjust the meetings based on the specific needs of your group.

What if I'm nervous about going to a group?

It is natural and okay to feel anxious about doing something new, especially in group therapy. We know and are here to assist you every step of the way. The majority of our clients find that their anxiety disappears as soon as they get to know the open, welcoming atmosphere of the group.

How does group therapy work in conjunction with other treatments?

Group therapy is typically a necessary supplement to individual therapy, medication, and other therapies. It provides you with the backing of your peers and the rehearsal of what you learn in real life with others who understand. This combination enhances your overall recovery and coping strategies.
