About Dilaudid Use & Addiction

Dilaudid is a brand name for the drug hydromorphone, which is a synthetic opioid narcotic. Dilaudid is used to treat individuals with moderate to severe pain who may be tolerant to other opioids and works by changing the way the brain responds to pain.

It’s said to be up to eight times stronger than morphine, which can unfortunately lead to an easy Dilaudid abuse. From 2002 to 2014, the percentage of individuals aged 12 and older who have used hydromorphone for recreational purposes increased by around 13 percent per year.

The Dangers of Dilaudid

Symptoms

On the streets, Dilaudid can be referred to as “Big D,” “Super 8,” “M-80s,” “Dilles,” and “Shake & Bake.” Once a person becomes a regular Dilaudid user, it will take a higher dose each time in order to feel the same effects. This can lead to a need for Dilaudid addiction treatment. Some symptoms of a Dilaudid “high” include:

A feeling of euphoria.
Overall relaxation
Pain relief
Reduced anxiety
A warm feeling
Sedation

Dangers & Effects of Dilaudid Use

The effects of it can take less than 15 minutes to begin and can last for more than six hours. Because the drug is so much stronger than morphine, a physical dependence can develop quickly and users may need to turn to Dilaudid treatment. The short-term and long-term effects include:

Nausea and/or vomiting
Constipation
Dizziness
Itchy or flushed skin
Confusion
Loss of appetite

Long-term effects include:

Frequent mood swings.
Sleep disturbances
Muscle and/or bone pain.

Respiratory depression
Mental health issues like anxiety or depression.

Withdrawal Symptoms from Dilaudid Use

Whether it’s regarding short-term or long-term use, any decrease in a normal dose amount can result in withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms can peak in as little as nine hours, which is why we recommend withdrawal from Dilaudid treatment. Withdrawal effects include things like:

Restlessness
Nausea
Excessive sweating
Muscle aches
Depression
Anxiety or panic attacks.
An emotional numbness.

What to Expect

Arrival to our facility

We will begin by coordinating your arrival to our facility. Victory Bay will work with you to ensure you are transported safely and quickly to our well-maintained facility. Once you have arrived at the center, you can expect to be greeted by our professional addiction treatment staff who will be expecting your arrival.If you are hungry – or maybe a little nervous – you can expect to receive a welcome meal, snack and a drink.

Intake

You will meet our Intake Coordinator, who will sit with you and begin the process by doing some basic assessments and paperwork. You will be scheduled to meet with your own personal Clinical Therapist with whom you will work with throughout your time here. Also, you will be scheduled to meet with one of our incredible Doctors to assess your specific needs.

Finally, with early sobriety, often comes lots of chaos in our lives. Our team will assess any and all areas of your life where you might need support and guidance. Our Case Management team will begin to plan a strategy for supporting you with any Legal, Employment, or Educational needs.
