About Painkiller Use & Addiction

Painkillers work to rewire the nervous system so that your body blocks the feeling of pain. However, they also stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain to produce a “high.” This effect of painkillers is what leads people to painkiller abuse.

Painkillers are the most popular abused prescription drug and abuse in the U.S. has been steadily rising since the 1980s. In fact, more than 15 million people abuse prescription drugs in the U.S. each year. These drugs can come in the form of tablets, syrups, capsules, powders, or injectable solutions and while anyone can abuse painkillers, teens and young adults are the most common group to do so.

The Dangers of Painkillers

Some people take painkillers to experience the high while others take them to numb their pain. Either way, those who use painkillers recreationally usually develop a painkiller addiction when they frequently experience symptoms like:

  • Overall relaxation
  • A state of euphoria
  • Increased happiness
  • A feeling of calmness and content
  • Sedation
  • A warming sensation
