About Vicodin (Hydrocodone) Use & Addiction

Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic opioid created from codeine that is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is often formulated with other medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen and administered for analgesia or as a cough suppressant.

Branded as things like Vicodin, Norco, or Lortab, hydrocodone is powerfully addictive and even when used infrequently, can lead to hydrocodone abuse. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, more than 24 million people over the age of 12 have used the drug for non-medical reasons.

Since 1992, the recreational use of opioids has tripled and 99 percent of the hydrocodone supply is consumed by those in the U.S. Unfortunately, teens are one of the largest groups of individuals to develop a Norco addiction; in a 2013 survey, more than 850,000 teens aged 12-17 admitted abusing a hydrocodone product.

Many different prescription medications contain the synthetic opiate Hydrocodone, including those listed below. They are all used for the same purpose – as pain medicine – and all carry the same effects of dependence from long-term use.

  • Vicodin
  • Norco
  • Lortab
  • Lorcet
  • Vicoprofen

The Dangers of Vicodin (Hydrocodone)

Like other painkillers, hydrocodone can not only block the feeling of pain but can also produce a high in those who use the drug, leading to hydrocodone addiction.

Because users often develop a tolerance to painkillers, it’s easy to experience Norco abuse. This means many of those taking Norco for its euphoric effects will continually increase their dosage to achieve the same effects.

Some common symptoms include:

  • A heightened sense of well-being
  • Overall relaxation
  • A state of euphoria
  • Reduced worry or stress
  • Sedation
  • A warming sensation
