Opiates (Opioids) Addiction & Treatment

Opiates are some of the oldest known drugs in the world and derive from the alkaloid compounds in the opium poppy plant. Today, the term “opioids” is largely used to describe both opiates and opioids. While some opiates are used as a medication, others have no acceptable safety use and can lead to a need for an opiate addiction treatment center.

Some of the most popular opiates include:

  • Oxycodone
  • Heroin
  • Morphine
  • Codeine
  • Hydrocodone
  • Fentanyl

About Opioid Use & Opioid Addiction

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine, and many others.” Opioids are frequently used non-medically for their euphoric effects or to prevent withdrawal.

Opioids are derived from the Opium plant which naturally contains Codeine and morphine, which all opiates are derived from. All opioids are chemically related and interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the body and brain to produce morphine-like effects.

Physical tolerance can develop over time and you may need to take more of the drug to experience the same effects or to function properly. This is called dependence.

Someone who became addicted to prescription opioids may switch to heroin supplement heroin because heroin is readily available, inexpensive, and easy to prepare for injection. Opioids produced illegally can be particularly dangerous and have a variety of unpredictable effects.

The Dangers of Opiates (Opioids)

When it comes to opiate treatments, there are many different opiates available. While each one can cause a different reaction, some of the more common symptoms of all opiates are:

  • Elation or euphoria
  • Pain relief
  • A warm, pleasant feeling
  • Relaxation
  • Increased confidence
